Glacier Approach

The May 25, 2018 ranger patrol describes the Puyallup and South Mowich glaciers before the lower buttress of Sunset Ridge. Its illustrated high camp was on the South Mowich Glacier at 8,500 ft. The report does not provide a complete current road-to-camp approach.

Ridge & Face

The patrol reached the ridge above a lower pyramid-shaped face around 11,650 ft, then moved onto the upper Mowich Face. The report describes steep snow and ice there before Liberty Cap and the saddle toward Columbia Crest.

What the Numbers Cover

The report’s 5 miles and 6,400 ft of gain describe the climbing section only, excluding approach and descent. Its 2018 snow, crevasse and bergschrund observations are historical, not today’s conditions.

Lower Face & Upper Transition

The May 2018 patrol separates an approximately 1,800-foot lower pyramid-shaped face from the ridge proper. Above the ridge, the party moved onto upper Mowich Face for roughly 1,300 feet of steeper climbing before reaching Liberty Cap. The illustrated line therefore did not remain on the ridge crest all the way to the endpoint.

Terrain Along the Route

Glacier crossings, ridge rock and steep snow form the western ascent.

Sunset Ridge is not a catch-all for the different lines in Sunset Amphitheater. The patrol’s mileage excludes approach and descent and is not displayed as a trip total. Source accounts describe reference terrain, not current route conditions. Reference Set: 2026-10-23.

Trailhead & Approach

Westside Road is the access corridor for the western mountain. Road walking, trail choice and glacier approaches differ between routes; the linked historical climb accounts are not present-day access directions.

Roads & Closures

Access notice · October 23, 2026: NPS lists Westside Road open to the Dry Creek barricade, with vehicles parked south of the barrier. Seasonal closure date is not yet set. The road passes through an active geohazard zone.

Route & Endpoint

Sunset Ridge is not a catch-all for the different lines in Sunset Amphitheater. The patrol’s mileage excludes approach and descent and is not displayed as a trip total.

Climbing Registration

NPS requires registration for glacier travel or travel above 10,000 feet. The climbing fee and the required permit are separate.

Camping & Reservations

The park manages camp and climbing-route capacity through its wilderness permit system. Check the official process for your dates and chosen camps.

Seasonal Registration

The September 8, 2026 ranger update identifies self-registration at Paradise and White River. Station staffing and access change seasonally.

Western Road Limits

NPS's October 23 road table allows vehicles only south of the Dry Creek barricade on Westside Road. Its open-road status does not mean that vehicles can reach the historical western climbing trailheads beyond the barrier.
