Glacier Approach
The NPS route begins at White River and Glacier Basin, crosses St. Elmo’s Pass at 7,500 ft, then traverses the Winthrop Glacier, Curtis Ridge and Carbon Glacier. The ridge itself begins around 8,600 ft, well beyond the trail approach.
Thumb Rock & Ridge Features
Thumb Rock, at 10,500 ft in the brief, is the named high-camp area. The upper ridge includes the Gunsight rock band, Black Pyramid and steep snow or ice leading toward Liberty Cap.
Summit & Descent
Liberty Cap is not Columbia Crest. The NPS description commonly carries over the mountain and joins the Emmons-Winthrop descent through Liberty Saddle, rather than reversing Liberty Ridge.
Approach Split & Camp Zones
The Liberty approach leaves the Camp Schurman-bound line below St. Elmo's Pass, rather than ascending the standard Emmons approach all the way to Schurman. Glacier Basin, the Winthrop traverse, Carbon Alpine terrain and Thumb Rock are separate camping areas along a long approach; a Thumb Rock reservation does not identify the lower approach camps.
Above Black Pyramid
The upper ridge regains its crest above Black Pyramid and encounters a separate bergschrund below the summit ice cap. Liberty Cap, Liberty Saddle and Columbia Crest are distinct features. The usual Emmons descent drops through the saddle toward Schurman; continuing to Columbia Crest adds a further ascent instead of being an automatic part of reaching Liberty Cap.
Terrain Along the Route
Rock, steep snow and ice form the ridge above the Carbon Glacier; the usual carry-over descent uses Emmons-Winthrop.
Length is the source’s published route length; approach variants and descent can change the trip total. Liberty Cap is a separate high point from Columbia Crest. Continuing to Columbia Crest and the descent are additional segments, not represented as the ridge itself. Source accounts describe reference terrain, not current route conditions. Climbing Registration
NPS requires registration for glacier travel or travel above 10,000 feet. The climbing fee and the required permit are separate.
Camping & Reservations
The park manages camp and climbing-route capacity through its wilderness permit system. Check the official process for your dates and chosen camps.
Seasonal Registration
The September 8, 2026 ranger update identifies self-registration at Paradise and White River. Station staffing and access change seasonally.
Trailhead Facilities Reference
The 2018 brief documents water and bathrooms at White River trailhead and a toilet at Glacier Basin. Seasonal road closure does not imply those summer facilities remain operating.
