Two Approaches

The Mountaineers describes White River through Glacier Basin, St. Elmo’s Pass, Winthrop Glacier, Curtis Ridge and Carbon Glacier. Its western alternative starts at Mowich Lake through Spray Park. White River Road is seasonally closed; Mowich access is separately blocked at Fairfax Bridge.

High Camp & Terrain

The reference places high camp around 10,200 ft below the Ptarmigan ice cliffs. Above the bergschrund, steep snow or ice ramps and rock bands lead to the Hourglass. These are distinct features rather than a continuous hiking ridge.

Upper Variations

The guide distinguishes a passage east of the upper buttress through glacier and ice terrain from a western snow, rock and ice exit. The June 2018 ranger-hosted report describes a rock-step variation; it is not evidence of a current fixed line.

Carryover Descent

The guide describes an Emmons Glacier descent toward White River. Starting at Mowich and finishing at White River uses different trailheads. The 2018 party’s account also returned through Camp Schurman.

High Camp Is Above the Route Entry

The reference approach gains a high camp below the Ptarmigan Ice Cliffs, but the climbing line begins lower after a descent across Mowich Glacier toward a bergschrund. Above the entry, rising snow and ice ramps thread rock bands toward the Hourglass. The approach-to-camp profile and the technical ascent are therefore not one continuous uphill ridge.

Terrain Along the Route

The report describes the Hourglass and upper ice or rock variations.

The linked report uses a White River / Curtis Ridge approach. No fixed current line or Mowich Lake access is implied. Source accounts describe reference terrain, not current route conditions. Reference Set: 2026-10-23.

Climbing Registration

NPS requires registration for glacier travel or travel above 10,000 feet. The climbing fee and the required permit are separate.

Camping & Reservations

The park manages camp and climbing-route capacity through its wilderness permit system. Check the official process for your dates and chosen camps.

Seasonal Registration

The September 8, 2026 ranger update identifies self-registration at Paradise and White River. Station staffing and access change seasonally.

White River Trailhead Parking

NPS identifies hiker/climber day-use parking at White River Campground and specifically excludes parking in campsites. This is the eastern approach start, not the currently blocked Mowich Lake road approach.
