The Route

The Gibraltar Ledges route leaves Camp Muir for ledges beneath Gibraltar Rock and an upper ice chute.

Paradise & Camp Muir

The lower approach follows Skyline Trail past Panorama Point and Pebble Creek, then the Muir Snowfield to Camp Muir. Gibraltar Ledges shares this access with other south-side climbs but branches west of the standard Cathedral Gap approach.

Cowlitz Cleaver & Beehive

Above Muir, the described route follows the western Cowlitz Glacier below Cowlitz Cleaver. It passes beneath the Beehive and uses a notch in the cleaver to reach the base of Gibraltar Rock and the ledge system.

Ledges & Upper Chute

The traverse continues on the ledges into the ice chute between Gibraltar Rock and the upper Nisqually ice cliff. This reaches the saddle above the rock, followed by roughly 2,000 vertical feet of upper summit slopes to the east crater rim.

Crater & Descent

The true summit lies across the crater beyond the east-rim arrival. The guide describes returning by the climbing line or a separate Ingraham Glacier/Cadaver Gap descent. Its winter-season emphasis reflects rockfall and icefall on the ledges, not an administrative closure.

Terrain Along the Route

The route combines glacier approach, exposed ledges and a snow or ice chute.

This entry describes the ledges route, not a separately verified Gibraltar Chute ascent. Source accounts describe reference terrain, not current route conditions. Reference Set: 2026-10-23.
