Historical Approach & Camp

The July 25, 2017 ranger patrol began at Mowich Lake and established a bivouac at 9,600 ft between the North Mowich and Edmunds glaciers, near the headwall. The usual road approach is now blocked by the Fairfax Bridge closure.

Headwall to Upper Ridge

The patrol climbed the headwall to around 13,000 ft, then followed upper Sunset Ridge toward Liberty Cap. The source distinguishes this ascent from the neighboring Central Mowich Face.

Dated Observations

The report contains photos and descriptions of bergschrund access, rock bands and upper snow formations from July 2017. Those details explain the terrain, but do not establish a present crossing or current snow surface.

Headwall Entry & Neighboring Face

The July 2017 patrol's direct bergschrund entry was blocked, and the party used a rock-band bypass near twin rock towers. Its observation of a possible bypass under Central Mowich was only an observation of the neighboring face, not a Central Mowich ascent. The report's photographs document different entries and different faces within the same northwest-side panorama.

Terrain Along the Route

A glacier approach leads to the headwall and upper ridge.

Edmunds Headwall and Central Mowich Face are neighboring lines, not interchangeable names or tracks. Source accounts describe reference terrain, not current route conditions. Reference Set: 2026-10-23.

Camping & Reservations

The park manages camp and climbing-route capacity through its wilderness permit system. Check the official process for your dates and chosen camps.

Seasonal Registration

The September 8, 2026 ranger update identifies self-registration at Paradise and White River. Station staffing and access change seasonally.

Mowich Road Restriction

NPS's October 23 road table closes the SR 165 approach to pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles at Fairfax Bridge and lists no alternate road route. The 2017 Mowich Lake departure is not a currently drivable trailhead.
