The Route

The northeast route climbs from Glacier Basin over the Inter Glacier to Camp Schurman and the upper glaciers.

Approach

The NPS brief starts at White River Campground, at 4,200 ft. Glacier Basin Trail follows forest and valley terrain before the route climbs the Inter Glacier. Camp Curtis marks the transition toward the Emmons side of the mountain.

Camp Schurman

Camp Schurman sits beside Steamboat Prow and is the principal high camp in the brief. The approach to this camp is a separate glacier segment from the summit ascent above it.

Upper Mountain

Above Schurman, the Corridor leads into the Emmons-Winthrop glacier system. Crevasses and steeper snow or ice shape the upper ascent toward the summit crater; the published line is not a permanently marked trail.

Descent

The NPS description returns through the upper glaciers, Camp Schurman and Inter Glacier to White River. This is different from a Paradise / Camp Muir descent on the other side of the mountain.

Where the Trail Ends

Glacier Basin Trail follows the Inter Fork valley for 3.5 miles, with the grade steepening near the basin. The Emmons Moraine viewpoint is a separate spur about a mile from the start. Beyond Glacier Basin camp, a climber's track crosses the wetland margin toward Inter Glacier; the summit approach is no longer the maintained valley trail.

Camp Curtis & Emmons Flats

The 2017 route brief places Camp Curtis near 8,700 feet and Camp Schurman near 9,500 feet, separated by glacier and rocky approach terrain. Emmons Flats is another camping bench above Schurman, near 9,800 feet. These are different camp locations rather than interchangeable names for one high camp.

Terrain Along the Route

Glacier crossings and alpine snow slopes above Camp Schurman; crevasse patterns change the upper line.

Length is the source’s published route length; approach variants and descent can change the trip total. Emmons-Winthrop from White River, not the Disappointment Cleaver approach from Paradise. Source accounts describe reference terrain, not current route conditions. Reference Set: 2026-10-23.

Trailhead & Approach

The reference approach begins on Glacier Basin Trail at White River Campground. White River and Sunrise road access are seasonal; a closed road can add a substantial approach.

Roads & Closures

White River Road to the campground is closed for the season. NPS also prohibits pedestrians through the Fryingpan Creek Bridge construction closure zone. This affects the listed White River approach, not a park-wide closure of the climbing line.

Route & Endpoint

Emmons-Winthrop from White River, not the Disappointment Cleaver approach from Paradise.

Climbing Registration

NPS requires registration for glacier travel or travel above 10,000 feet. The climbing fee and the required permit are separate.

Camping & Reservations

The park manages camp and climbing-route capacity through its wilderness permit system. Check the official process for your dates and chosen camps.

Seasonal Registration

The September 8, 2026 ranger update identifies self-registration at Paradise and White River. Station staffing and access change seasonally.

Climber Parking

NPS specifies the hiker/climber day-use parking area at White River Campground, not a campground campsite. The Glacier Basin trail begins at the campground's upper end.

Camp Facilities Reference

The 2017 brief documents a toilet and food-storage container at Glacier Basin, and a ranger hut and bathroom at Camp Schurman. It does not establish current staffing, operating facilities or campsite vacancies.
