Westside Approach

The 1966 first-ascent account approaches from Westside Road through Klapatche and St. Andrews parks, Puyallup Cleaver, and the Puyallup, South Mowich and Edmunds glaciers. A separate Mowich Lake approach appears in the 2017 ranger patrol; its SR 165 road access is now blocked.

Camp & Face

The American Alpine Journal account places camp on a nunatak at 9,600 ft between the upper North Mowich and Edmunds glaciers. The central face rises above North Mowich Glacier through snow or ice toward rock bands near 13,000 ft.

Upper Finish & Historical Descent

The first-ascent account reaches Liberty Cap, not Columbia Crest, and descends via the Tahoma Sickle toward St. Andrews Rock. Those passages describe July 1966, not present glacier connections.

Later Carryover

A July 2002 firsthand report describes a different upper ice variation, continuing from Liberty Cap over Columbia Crest and down DC to Camp Muir and Paradise. It also records an abandoned off-route detour; that detour is not shown as the route.

Central Face's Upper Rock Bands

The July 1966 ascent reached rock bands around 13,000 feet, climbed a short vertical cliff and traversed a narrow ledge into an ice chute between the rock bands and the capping ice cliff. These mixed upper passages distinguish the central line from a generic snow face or the neighboring Edmunds Headwall. They are historical terrain evidence, not an inspected present passage.

Terrain Along the Route

The central face is a different line from the adjacent Edmunds Headwall.

Historical Westside and Mowich Lake approaches are distinguished; the Mowich Lake road access is currently closed. Liberty Cap and Columbia Crest are separate endpoints. Source accounts describe reference terrain, not current route conditions. Reference Set: 2026-10-23.

Reports

Northwest Face Comparison · June 2019

The ranger photo survey separately labels North Mowich Headwall, Central Mowich Face, Edmunds Headwall and Sunset Ridge. These labels prevent an adjacent face's image or report from being presented as Central Mowich itself.
