Mowich & Wonderland Approach

The normal trailhead is at Mowich Lake's northwest side. The route follows Wonderland Trail for about 1.25 miles before the Tolmie Peak branch. That branch first descends, then climbs steeply toward Eunice Lake. This low section and lake approach make the profile more complex than a continuous climb from the parking area.

Eunice Lake & Lookout

The final mile climbs from Eunice Lake to the fire lookout, with the lake below and Mount Rainier beyond. The same trail provides the return to Mowich. NPS lists no wilderness camps at Eunice Lake or Tolmie Peak; the nearest is Mowich Lake, and wilderness overnight camping requires a permit. Pets and fires are prohibited on this park trail.

Terrain Along the Route

Forest trail and lake basins lead to the final ridge climb above Eunice Lake.

The current NPS route page lists 6.5 miles and 1,010 ft gain. Older park brochures and WTA give different distances; approach and trail revisions affect the total. Reference Set: 2026-10-23.
