The Route

A forest trail climbs past Talapus Lake to the higher Olallie Lake basin.

  1. Talapus TrailheadCreek-side forest climb
  2. Talapus Lake ForkWest camps or Olallie continuation
  3. Pratt Lake ConnectorRight-hand branch
  4. Olallie LakeLeft branch to upper basin

Talapus Creek Approach

The trail climbs through cedar and hemlock forest, steepening into switchbacks beside Talapus Creek. Raised trail sections cross wetter ground near the first lake.

Talapus Lake Fork

Before the creek crossing, the left branch reaches campsites on Talapus Lake's west side. The right branch provides other shore access and continues uphill toward Olallie Lake.

Olallie Junction & Basin

About 1.2 miles above Talapus is another junction. Right crosses the creek toward Pratt Lake Trail; left continues 0.2 mile up a steeper rise before leveling beside Olallie Lake. The route stays above its western shore, with short descents to lakeside sites.

Terrain Along the Route

A forest trail with switchbacks and creek crossings connects the two lakes.

Temporary Construction Closure

Forest Order 06-05-26-09 closes FR 9030 from its FR 9031 junction, the trailhead and Trail 1039 to Talapus Creek, September 21–October 31, 2026 unless rescinded sooner. The order prohibits road, recreation-site and trail use, not merely vehicle access.

Normal Road Approach

From I-90 exit 45, follow FR 9030 north under the freeway and bear right at the junction after one mile. The gravel road ends at Talapus trailhead; this is not the Pratt Lake lot.

Normal Parking & Wilderness Entry

WTA lists Northwest Forest Pass for parking and a free self-issued wilderness permit at the trailhead kiosk. Its separate winter note describes FR 9030 closing to vehicles; that routine winter rule is distinct from the 2026 construction order.

Talapus & Olallie Reports

WTA reports can stop at Talapus, continue to Olallie or arrive by a different connector. Their start and endpoint matter, especially during restrictions on the usual Talapus approach.

Construction Order & Map

The Forest Service order defines the closed road, trailhead and trail segment, its dates and exemptions. It is the controlling access notice, not evidence of conditions at either lake.
