Creek & Horse Camp
The route crosses a creek near the start and then climbs sustained forest switchbacks. It enters Mount Skokomish Wilderness around 2,000 feet. At about 1.8 miles, Horse Camp marks the junction where the shared approach divides into the summit loop. The resulting outing is a lollipop, not a single trail followed identically all the way up and down.
Summit Loop & Burned Slopes
The shorter left branch gains the summit in about 1.1 miles; the other branch is longer and less steep. Upper slopes include the 2006 Bear Gulch Fire footprint, where forest openings expose views above Lake Cushman. The endpoint is a small rocky outcrop. Completing the other side of the summit loop rejoins Horse Camp before the common forest descent to the trailhead.
WTA's header supplies the 4,301-ft high point; an older body-text elevation differs. Reference Set: 2026-10-23.

Route Scope
The summit loop, not just the common approach, is included.
Road Approach
From Hoodsport, SR 119 reaches the Lake Cushman junction after 9.3 miles. Turn onto FR 24; the trailhead is about 2.7 miles farther, beyond the end of pavement.
Parking & Facilities
WTA lists free parking in the small trailhead lot and one privy. The summit loop rejoins Horse Camp before the common descent, so there is no separate exit lot.
