Forest Switchbacks & Basin
The route starts at the Cascade River Road end, about 23.1 miles from the highway. The road changes from pavement to gravel and becomes narrower and steeper on its upper section. From the parking area, repeated forest switchbacks gain the basin before an open meadow and rockfield traverse leads toward Cascade Pass.
Pass & Separate Sahale Branch
NPS lists Cascade Pass at 3.7 miles one way, gaining about 1,700 feet. The pass is the endpoint for this return outing. Sahale Arm branches just east of the pass and adds a steep 2.2-mile ascent toward Sahale Glacier; that is a separate destination. Trailhead facilities include parking and vault toilets. Dogs are not allowed on this national-park trail.
