The Route

The climbers' route leaves Heliotrope Ridge's hiking route near the former cabin area and climbs toward the glacier moraine.

  1. Heliotrope TrailheadForest approach past Grouse Creek
  2. Climbers JunctionBranch toward Hogsback, not the hiking overlook
  3. Moraine & Glacier CampsCamp areas below the Black Buttes
  4. Coleman–Deming SaddleBetween Colfax and the Roman Wall
  5. Roman WallAscent to the summit plateau
  6. Grant PeakTrue summit east-northeast across the plateau
  7. Heliotrope TrailheadReturn by the Coleman–Deming approach

Heliotrope Ridge & Climbers Junction

The approach crosses Grouse Creek on a bridge and climbs through old-growth forest to the former Kulshan Cabin site. Around two miles from the trailhead, the climbers branch turns toward Hogsback; the other branch continues to the hiking moraine viewpoint.

Moraine & Glacier Camps

The Mountaineers describes a camp near the glacier-edge moraine around 6,000 ft, with higher options near 7,000 ft along the ridge or Black Buttes. These differ from the lower hiking endpoint and are reference camp areas rather than current bookings.

Black Buttes & Saddle

The glacier route climbs southeast toward the Black Buttes, then toward the saddle below the Roman Wall at about 9,200 ft. Colfax Peak branches from this broader corridor but is not Mount Baker's summit itinerary.

Roman Wall & Grant Peak

Above the saddle, the climb passes the Roman Wall's steep snow to the broad summit plateau. The highest summit is farther east-northeast across the plateau. The described descent reverses the Coleman–Deming line to the glacier camps and Heliotrope approach.

Road Notices

The guide notes washout susceptibility; that does not verify a current road closure.

Reports Scope

Heliotrope hiking reports cover the lower approach, not necessarily Coleman Glacier.

Approach Stream Crossings

Beyond the bridged Grouse Creek, the Heliotrope approach has unbridged streams with flow varying with melt, rain and time of day. A lower hiking report does not establish upper-glacier conditions.

Heliotrope Trailhead Facilities

The trailhead has vault toilets, picnic tables and no potable water. Federal recreation passes apply; Washington's Discover Pass is not valid here. Winter use requires a Sno-Park permit.

Wilderness Rules

Party size is limited to 12 and campfires are prohibited. Human and pet waste must be packed out above treeline and on snow, ice or rock.
